WSSF: Day 8 Highlights
The second weekend of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival is officially ON. Long weekend + Friday in Whistler + WSSF + surprise decent weather = a completely packed Whistler Village on Day 8.
With a few fresh inches of snow, the mountain was the best it’s been all week. Believe it or not, there are still a few fresh powder patches to be found up top. Down in the Valley, DogFest kicked off (I’m not kidding—there was even a dog shaming parade), New Zealanders Shapeshifter took over the live stage (Whistler’s Kiwis rejoiced), and pro skiers tested out the Big Air jump in preparation for the big event on Day 9.
This writer’s favorite pro skier, Colby James West, filmed a live episode of his upcoming show, aptly titled The Colby West Show. Industry pros Sean Pettit and Gus Kenworthy joined him on the stage for what can only be described as a talk show combined with a variety show. It was hilarious.
Will the rain put a damper on Day 9’s Big Air show? Poor weather has already canceled the first annual King of Diamonds Poker Rally—a contest where skiers had to send it down 10 different black runs, receiving a playing card after each run, with the winner being the person with the best poker run. I have a feeling the Village will still be a popular place to be on the last Saturday of the WSSF!
