Rich Ski History In New Mexico

Enchanted Forest is the largest and oldest cross country ski and snowshoe area in New Mexico. Jon and Judy Miller moved to Red River in 1963 where they taught cross country skiing in Red River’s back country from 1970 to 1979. In 1985 they turned this passion and side business into a groomed ski area atop Bobcat pass, Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Area.

Geoff Goins began working at the ski area in 1990 with a management role since 2001. In 2010 he and his wife Ellen Miller-Goins, Jon and Judy’s daughter, purchased Enchanted Forest.

More Than Just A Ski Area

WinterReview spoke to owner Geoff Goins about the sale and the opportunity at Enchanted Forest: “We’re selling a cross country ski area, but really that area has a lot more that it can offer for mountain biking and hiking and other outdoor events. We’ve had really popular mountain bike races and running races.” Goins sees opportunity for outdoor recreation outside of Winter sports including biking, hiking, running, athletic events and education such as photography and astronomy camps.

The base lodge sits at 9820’ elevation and the trail system tops out at 10077’ elevation with an average annual snowfall of 240”. There are 32k of groomed cross country ski trails groomed for classic and freestyle Nordic skiing, 18k of dedicated snowshoe trails and 5k of ski trails that users can ski with their dogs.

Trailside yurts are also included in the sale and are available to guests for ski in/ski out overnight stays and hike/bike in stays during the summer season.

When asked if guests can expect new owners this Winter season Goins replied: “We’ve had a little bit of interest, but no offers yet. We kept it alive and it’ll be open this year. Hopefully we’ll find someone as enchanted by it as we were”.

The ski area and it’s assets are listed at $344,500 and interested parties are directed to contact Swan Realty at 575-613-4243.
